Kay has worked in the wedding industry for 5 years as the owner of trend led bakery Kaleidoscope Bakery.
Having transformed the Irish wedding cake landscape with her fun and contemporary flavours and styles, it was a new challenge to rescue cool brides from the ubiquitous boring vintage bridal fashion aesthetic.
Kay has always been a maker, from being a home ec nerd as a teen, to working as an art educator, teaching craft classes to drunken hen parties, to now running creative businesses; making things is just what she does.
Kay is also a wife to Mark and mother to new baby/intern Bonnie. Kay and Bonnie work from her studio in Baggot Street which they share with Martha Lynn and Merle O'Grady and her baby/intern Vega.
Who is the Bond & Ceremony bride?
She's down to earth, naturally stylish, fun, sociable and great at throwing a party. She's sensible with money, never ostentatious, and covets memories and experiences over material goods. We've designed a standalone range of accessories so that a cool girl can style a high street dress with one of our veils, crowns or sashes and some amazing shoes and she'll look 100% like a 'real' bride but she'll be true to herself - without blowing 2 months rent on a dress.
Why did you choose to stock Irish designers?
There are so many fashion designers who create pieces that would be perfect for bridal wear, but brides are often hesitant about wearing something 'non-bridal' on their wedding day. I'm aiming to gather these cool pieces under one roof and rebrand them as bridal, to give brides permission to wear them for their wedding, reassure them of their own style and celebrate unique and fashionable bridal choices.
I started with Irish designers as there is simply a great choice here. In particular, Irish designers excel in handcraftsmanship, beadwork, embellishment and embroidery techniques - for example Jill deBurca's Irish Singer embroidered flower crowns. I wanted to support that and be proud of it and I hope to stock many more Irish names as the business grows.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes! We love working with brides to make cool custom accessories to complete their bridal outfit, just send me an email to [email protected] - and I encourage brides not to be worried that it will be very expensive to get something custom made, as I can use my super design skills to create something great within any budget.
